Nothing is quite as refreshing after a long day at work as lying on your bed and enjoying a good nap. Getting a good night’s sleep is important to feel refreshed and rejuvenated for the next day. If you suffer from restless leg syndrome or RLS, you are a part of the 10% of Americans who are affected. You may be well aware of the struggle to get the restorative sleep you need.
While RLS can happen to anyone, it is more common among women and adults. Mild symptoms begin in early childhood and get worse with age if not treated at the right time. After the age of 50, the symptoms become severe and unbearable. Consult with Atur Kasha DO to manage and relieve the symptoms using the right treatment option.
Common symptoms of restless leg syndrome
-
Discomfort in the legs and a strong urge to move.
Restless leg syndrome, or RLS, can cause uncomfortable sensations in your legs and cause an extremely uncontrollable urge to move all the time. It usually happens when you sit down or lie down on your bed to sleep at night. You may experience temporary relief by moving your legs, but it is not a long-term solution. Feelings like itching and prickling may occur in your legs.
-
Problems while sleeping.
People with restless leg syndrome have a hard time falling or staying asleep due to the irresistible urge to move. Besides your sleep time, this may happen anytime you are trying to rest, even while sitting down on a sofa or chair. In extreme cases, patients do not get a good night’s sleep for many days on end.
-
The more you rest, the more it happens.
The chief symptom of restless leg syndrome is the uncontrollable urge to move. Therefore, it may worsen the symptoms every time you try to rest. For example, you may not have the urge to move while walking, but it may start the minute you stop or sit down. This condition can make sitting for long hours in a car, airplane, or movie theatre difficult.
-
Daytime drowsiness.
Since restless leg syndrome makes getting a good night’s sleep challenging, you may not get the rest you require after a long day of work and feel tired or sleepy in the morning. You may feel extra sleepy during the day and find it hard to focus and concentrate on specific tasks or your job. You may also be extra moody and get irritated easily due to a lack of sleep.
